Discover the Most Effective Core Work Out on Water

Stand Up Paddle Boarding, or SUP, is fast becoming one of the most popular sports born out of the surfing stable and it’s here in Britain!

More importantly, you don’t need experience on killer waves or warm oceans to enjoy it. Here in England, you can learn to SUP on lakes, rivers or even reservoirs, as well as the ocean. Your core muscles will receive one of the most effective workouts, as you learn to balance and move over the water with a 12-foot board and specially adapted paddle.

SUP is suitable for anyone, of any age and any level of fitness. Across Britain currently, children as young as eight years old are learning alongside people in their 60’s. The great thing about SUP is that people coming to the sport can approach it in a way that is completely tailored to their individual needs. New ‘SUP-ers’ may want to start out on a lake where conditions are calm and flat or, for the more adventurous, there are trained instructors country-wide who can take them straight out onto open water.

Not only is SUP a great core workout, as main muscle groups are constantly working to keep you steady on the board as you paddle, but it is also a highly effective way of greatly improving balance and coordination in a fun, safe and low-impact way.

SUP has a Hawaiian heritage and can be traced back to the early days of Polynesia. The sport is an ancient form of surfing, and began as a way for surfing instructors to manage large groups of learner surfers, as standing on the board gave them a higher viewpoint, increasing visibility of what was going on around them - such as incoming swell.

To begin with, this started with using a one-bladed paddle, whilst standing on a normal length surfboard. In the early 1960s, the Beach Boys of Waikiki would stand on their long boards, and paddle out with outrigger paddles to take pictures of the tourists learning to surf.

The first "modern" surfer to bring Stand Up Paddle Surfing out of Hawaii and onto mainland USA was Vietnam veteran, Rick Thomas. In 2000, Rick - on a 11ft Muoz board, and with a Leleo Kinimaka paddle - introduced California to the new sport and the rest is history!
